2015 JAG Formula Grant
Department: Grants Department

Discuss and consider execution of an Interlocal Agreement between Nueces County and the City of Corpus Christi for the purpose of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program FY 2015 Local Solicitation Award.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and to improve the criminal justice system. JAG replaces the Byrne Formula and Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) programs with a single funding mechanism that simplifies the administration process for grantees. The procedure for allocating JAG funds is a formula based on population and crime statistics, in combination with a minimum allocation to ensure that each state and territory receives an appropriate share.
Nueces County and the City of Corpus Christi were notified that $168,613 in funds is available. Nueces County was certified as a disparate jurisdiction; therefore, the County and the City of Corpus Christi must agree to share the allocation equally. The Interlocal Agreement states the City agrees to pay the County 50% of the award amount which makes the County’s allocation total $84,306. The Interlocal Agreement has been reviewed by both the City and County Attorney’s Offices.

The grant period will run from October 1, 2015 through September 30, 2019. These monies will be used to fund a drug prosecutor’s salary in the District Attorney’s Office and the remaining funds will be used by the Sheriff’s Office for license plate reader systems and for law enforcement training.

There is no cash match required for this grant. The County is estimated to receive $84,306.
