RECOMMENDATION
Discuss and consider acceptance of a grant award from the Office of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division for funding for the Nueces County Body-Worn Camera Program.
BACKGROUND
The goal of the Criminal Justice Division is to provide needed funding to improve public safety and support victims of crime by addressing system gaps and promoting innovative solutions to common problems. CJD is accepting applications for the purchase of body cameras and digital storage systems to serve as a tool in a law enforcement comprehensive problem-solving approach to enhance officer interactions with the public, build community trust, and gather important evidence for use in the prosecution of crimes.
DISCUSSION
On January 19, 2016, Nueces County was informed that it had been selected to receive a preliminary allocation for the purchase of 54 body cameras and associated video storage and equipment. On February 24, 2016, the Commissioners Court executed a resolution in support of the County’s grant application. The camera allocations will be as follows: Sheriff – 34; Constable Precinct 1 – 9; and Constable Precinct 5 – 11. All other law enforcement departments indicated that they already have body-worn cameras in use. The total project budget is $33,075. State law requires a 25% match of the grant award so the State share is $26,460 and the local match is $6,615.
