RECOMMENDATION
Discuss and consider approval of cost allocation method of witness fee charges for retired or temporary medical examiners.
BACKGROUND
The temporary Medical Examiner provides autopsy coverage on an as needed basis for the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office upon request and the services are paid for by the Medical Examiner's budgeted departmental funds. Other departments or outside agencies may request former Medical Examiners or temporary Medical Examiners for court testimony which are not requested directly from the Medical Examiner's Office. A fee schedule of services performed by the Medical Examiner's Office, including fees for depositions and testimony, are included in the Nueces County Medical Examiner Interlocal Agreement Fees & Services Provided Fee Schedule which was approved in commissioners court on November 18, 2015 with a January 1, 2016 effective date.
DISCUSSION
Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office requests that 1) witness fee charges by temporary or retired medical examiners be paid by department/agency requesting the work 2) witness fees from other requesting departments/agencies not be charged to the Nueces County Medical Examiner's departmental budget and 3) hourly fees charged should not be more than the current fee schedule in effect, which was approved in commissioners court on November 18, 2015 with a January 1, 2016 effective date.
