RECOMMENDATION
Discuss and consider the acceptance of a grant award from the Office of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division for funding of the Nueces County Public Safety Enhancements Project.
BACKGROUND
The Criminal Justice Division (CJD) of the Governor’s Office is soliciting competitive applications for projects that reduce crime and improve the criminal justice system Federal funds are authorized under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG).

On September 4, 2013, the Commissioners Court accepted a grant award under this CJD program for the Public Safety Project in the amount of $44,718. On October 8, 2014, the Commissioners Court accepted a second grant award in the amount of $37,235.50. On September 28, 2016, the Court ratified the acceptance of a third award for $20,535.30. These grants covered equipment and technology needs of several County departments.

On February 15, 2017, the Commissioners Court executed a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant award for another round of funding.
DISCUSSION
The Grants Administration Department sent an e-mail to all County law enforcement (Sheriff and Constables), the Juvenile Department, and the Public Works Environmental Enforcement Division, requesting their feedback as to whether their office wanted to participate in the new application for the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The interested parties who responded were as follows: Sheriff’s Office, Public Works’ Environmental Enforcement, and Constable’s Offices Precinct 1, 2, and 5. An application was prepared on behalf of the above named departments and totaled $52,195.37. Upon review by the Coastal Bend Council of Governments, the County was recommended for only one line item in the amount of $8,000. The line item was to replace the narcotics K-9 that recently had to be retired from the Constable’s Office Precinct 5.

The grant award amount is $8,000 with no cash match required.
