Commissioners Court - Regular
Resolution for Rifle Resistant Body Armor Grant
Maria Medrano, Grants Department
Adopt a resolution authorizing the submission of an application to the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division for the Nueces County Rifle-Resistant Body Armor Project.
The goal of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division (CJD) is to provide needed funding to improve public safety and support victims of crime by filling system gaps and promoting innovative solutions to common problems. In 2017, in response to the July 7th, 2016, shooting of numerous police officers in Dallas, Texas, the Legislature passed and the Governor signed Senate Bill 12, which created a grant program within the governor’s office to increase the safety of Texas’ law enforcement officers by assisting agencies in the purchase of rifle-resistant body armor. CJD is now accepting applications for projects under this program.
An email was sent to all law enforcement departments regarding this program. At the time of the submission of this agenda item (8/22/17), the following departments are interested: Sheriff’s Office (no quantity given yet), Constable Precinct 1 (11), Constable Precinct 2 (24), Constable Precinct 5 (11), and Public Works’ Environmental Enforcement Division (2). Each Level III vest is quoted at $697.50 each. Therefore, the application at this time would total $33,480; however, that is not including the number of vests needed by the Sheriff’s Office. That information will be made available at the Commissioners Court meeting. There is no cash match required for this program. If awarded, the County can begin purchasing vests on January 1, 2018.
