RECOMMENDATION
Discuss and consider the acceptance of a grant award from the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division for the Monitoring Offenders Against Women Project.
BACKGROUND
The goal of the Criminal Justice Division (CJD) is to provide needed funding to improve public safety and support victims of crime by filling system gaps and promoting innovative solutions to common problems. CJD is accepting applications for projects that promote a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to improving the criminal justice systems response to violent crimes against women, including domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.
DISCUSSION
On October 28, 2015, the Commissioners Court accepted an award for the Violence Against Women Formula grant. The grant project was for GPS monitors to be assigned to indigent defendants whom judges put on pretrial conditions of bond while they are awaiting trial. The grant award totaled $50,000 with no required cash match. The program has been working well and the departments involved applied for additional funding to continue and possibly expand the program.

On February 24, 2016, the Commissioners Court adopted a resolution in support of a grant application for the program’s continued funding. The grant award totals $50,000. A 35% match is required; therefore, the CJD share will be $32,500 and the County’s share will be $17,500. Available funds have been identified in the General Fund for this project.
