Bishop Library Grant Request
Submitted By: Natalie Eckstrom, Grants Department
Department: Grants Department

Ratify the submission of a funding request to the Alvin and Lucy Owsley Foundation for the Bishop branch library.
The Alvin and Lucy Owsley Foundation is a private foundation located in Houston, Texas. The Foundation provides funding primarily for the arts, education and human services. Their field of interests includes children/youth services, education, human services, libraries (public), medical research, and museums (art).
Since the Bishop branch of the County’s libraries is soon to receive exterior upgrades and expansion, upgrades to the interior would complement the outside work. A letter was sent to the Alvin and Lucy Owsley Foundation on June 24, 2015.

Funding would be used to purchase a 3M Detection Systems ($25,000) to help ensure that materials do not leave the library unless properly checked out, shelving units ($40,000), additional furnishings for seating ($15,000), a security/surveillance camera system ($5,000) since our staff often works alone after hours and on weekends, and collection development ($15,000) to expand the current collection. We anticipate the costs to be $100,000.

The Foundation’s board meets in March, June, September and December so we anticipate receiving a funding decision sometime in September 2015.
