RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division for funding of the Nueces County Public Safety Project.
BACKGROUND
The Criminal Justice Division (CJD) of the Governor’s Office is soliciting competitive applications for projects that reduce crime and improve the criminal justice system during the state fiscal year 2015 grant cycle. Federal funds are authorized under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG).

On September 4, 2013, the Commissioners Court accepted a grant award under this CJD program for the Public Safety Project in the amount of $44,718. The project included the Constable's Offices Precincts 1 through 4, the Juvenile Department, and the Public Works Environmental Enforcement Division. On October 8, 2014, the Commissioners Court accepted a grant award under this CJD program for the Public Safety Project in the amount of $37,235.50. The grant covered equipment and technology needs of these departments.
DISCUSSION
The Grants Administration Department sent an e-mail to all County law enforcement (Sheriff and Constables), the Juvenile Department, and the Public Works Environmental Enforcement Division, requesting their feedback as to whether their office wanted to participate in the new application for the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The interested parties who responded were as follows: Public Works Environmental Enforcement Division, Juvenile Department, Sheriff’s Office, Constable’s Office Precinct 1, and Precinct 3.

An application is being prepared on behalf of the above named departments as a continuing project. The applicants have expressed a need for updated or new technology such as camera recording systems, patrol cameras, body cameras, and radars. A preliminary budget is included with this agenda item; however, please note that it is subject to change and should be finalized before the February 4th Commissioners Court date. At which time, we will present the final proposed budget.

The grant application will total no more than $37,000.00 and the preliminary budget for now is $36,399.59. There is no match required. Applications are due on February 28, 2015 in CJD’s eGrants system.
