Grant Award for Reducing Violence Against Women
Maria Medrano, Grants Department
Discuss and consider acceptance of a grant award from the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division for funding of the Reducing Violence Against Women Project.
The Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division (CJD) is Texas’ administering agency for the Office on Violence Women (OVW) Recovery Act STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program (VAWA-Recovery Act). CJD significantly contributes to the safety of women in Texas through the deliberate deployment of strategy, direction and funding. These Recovery Act funds present a unique opportunity to strengthen the foundation of victim services and the criminal justice system in Texas by equipping agencies and communities with the resources required to restore victims and ensure justice.
The District Attorney’s Office was chosen to receive funding to assist in the prosecution of domestic violence cases and was invited to apply for the Violence Against Women Formula grant. Uniform Crime Reporting statistics show that Nueces County experiences a high number of domestic violence incidences, which is what prompted the Governor’s Office to contact our County specifically.
On January 29, 2014, the Commissioners Court adopted a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application for this grant opportunity. The total grant amount is $73,699.24 with no required cash match.
