Information
RECOMMENDATION
Discuss and consider submission of a project proposal to the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program (CBBEP) for consideration of grant funding for the Nueces County Barrier Island Habitat Management Master Plan project.
BACKGROUND
The Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program (CBBEP) is a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to researching, restoring and protecting the bays and estuaries of the Texas Coastal Bend. The mission of the CBBEP is the implementation of the Coastal Bend Bays Plan, which is to protect and restore the health and productivity of the bays and estuaries while supporting continued economic growth and public use of the bays. The plan identifies specific actions that will benefit the bay system and the users of the bays and includes projects for which CBBEP provides grant funding.
DISCUSSION
Nueces County would like to submit a proposal to CBBEP’s Habitat and Living Resources Implementation Team which assists CBBEP by providing oversight and guidance for ongoing habitat and living resources projects and related monitoring and research initiatives including recommending related projects to be considered for inclusion in the CBBEP’s annual work plans.

The proposed Nueces County Barrier Island Habitat Management Master Plan project will involve the development of new and expanded habitat management and protection guidelines involving institutional measures, and structural and non-structural improvements (primarily at parks) on the Mustang-North Padre barrier island. This includes:

*Habitat Management/Restoration/Maintenance/Conservation issues to address;
*Endangered/Threatened/Rare Species monitoring and assessment;
*Beachfront and Shoreline erosion;
*Dune and Wetlands monitoring; and
*Water Quality

This project proposal will be submitted to CBBEP for their consideration for grant funding in the amount of $56,200 and does not require a match from the County. If awarded, a grant agreement will be submitted for the Court’s approval and acceptance upon receipt.
