Submission of Application for Texas Natural Resource Trustee Program
Roxana Hunt, Grants Department
Discuss and consider submission of a grant application for the Texas Natural Resource Trustee Program.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the Texas General Land Office serve as the state trustee agencies for administration of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process. Recently, funds were made available to the NRDA trustees to restore natural resources lost as a result of hazardous chemicals spilled from the former ASARCO smelter in Corpus Christi. Therefore, the state trustees released a Request for Proposals, soliciting projects that restore, rehabilitate or conserve estuarine aquatic habitats in Corpus Christi Bay, Nueces Bay, and surrounding coastal areas.
The County has begun discussions with the Corpus Christi Beach Association, Texas State Aquarium, and the U.S.S. Lexington regarding a project involving the Corpus Christi Beach area. The project proposal includes an observation deck for bird watching, a timber walkway surrounding the natural wetlands in the area, and a kayak launch for recreational use and for the improvement of water quality.
The project is estimated to cost approximately $1,000,000. There is no cash match required for this grant. The deadline to submit the proposal is Friday, July 27, 2012.
